چکیده

FOR the potential of providing rates of multiple Giga-bps in a single channel, millimeter wave (mmWave) communications have recently attracted substantial research interest. While mmWave technology is already being used in stationary scenarios such as indoor hotspots or backhaul, it is challenging to use mmWave frequencies in mobile networks, where transmitting/receiving nodes may be moving, channels may have a complicated structure, and the coordination among multiple nodes is difficult. To fully exploit the high potential rates of mmWave in mobile networks, many significant technical challenges must be tackled. The main objective of this IEEE JSAC Special Issue on “Millimeter wave communications for future mobile networks” is to collect the most recent technical advances in mmWave for future mobile networks. The response from the community to the call has been overwhelming. We received 96 submissions with a call period short than 4 months. Many of the submissions are from the most well known research groups in the field. After a strict review process, we decided to accept 38 papers, which will be published in two issues. The papers were selected based on the technical relevance and merits. Unfortunately, due to

The Future Generations of Mobile Communications Based on Broadband Access Technologies

The forthcoming mobile communication systems are expected to provide a wide variety of services, from high-quality voice to high-definition videos, through high-data-rate wireless channels anywhere in the world. The high data rate requires broad frequency bands, and sufficient broadband can be achieved in higher frequency bands such as microwave, Ka-band, and millimeter-wave. Broadband wireless...

Recent trends and future prospective on millimeter-wave CMOS circuits

Millimeter-wave communication uses a frequency of at least 30GHz, which is higher than that commonly used for wireless local-area networks (LANs) and cellular phones. Millimeter waves have been used for business communications and radar in luxury cars; however, their use has not yet spread to the general public. In recent years, an increasing amount of research results on millimeter-wave comple...

Guest Editorial Spectrum Sharing and Aggregation for Future Wireless Networks, Part I

WELCOME to the IEEE JSAC special issue on Spectrum Sharing and Aggregation for Future Wireless Networks. The conception of this special issue is motivated by the following observations: the ever-increasing penetration of both the mobile Internet and of the Internet-of-things is gradually clogging up the most valuable spectral bands available in the sub-2 GHz frequency range for future wireless ...

Millimeter-wave communications for 5G: fundamentals: Part I [Guest Editorial]

he widespread availability and demand for multime-dia capable devices and multimedia content have fueled the need for high-speed wireless connectivity beyond the capabilities of existing commercial standards. While fiber optic data transfer links can provide multi-gigabit-per-second data rates, cost and deployment are often prohibitive in many applications. Wireless links, on the contrary, can ...
